Retta Edward Retta is a new type of professional for the global
age called an Interculturalist. Over 25 years he has worked in 45
countries. During eight years with a British NGO, he designed cross-cultural
training for staff from 60 nations. A globalist of Mexican-American
heritage, Retta specializes in cross cultural competencies. His
work has ranged from cross cultural health care to coaching on how
to work with Russians for NASA's International Space Station.
Retta speaks fluent Portuguese, Spanish and survival German. He
also studied Arabic and Japanese. He has conducted crosscultural
training and consulting for major international companies and many
non-profits. Retta traveled throughout the Arabian Gulf, days before
the war in Iraq to support humanitarian efforts in the region. He
recently spoke in the national forum, The People Speak: America
Debates its Role in the World, sponsored by the Rockefeller Fund
and the United Nations Foundation, supporting "grassroots community
involvement in foreign policy."
Retta has published many articles on global diversity and cultural
best practices. He has been International and Cultural Advisor for
the Hispanic Journal and Director for South America for Business
Horizons magazine. In a 1996 publication, he accurately predicted
that Vicente Fox would become President of Mexico - unthinkable
at the time. Edward co-authored a series about cross-cultural management
for HR professionals, published on-line.
A frequent guest lecturer, Retta has spoken on intercultural management
at universities in the USA, Europe, Africa and South America. In
Germany, at Katholische Universität, he teaches Cross Cultural
Marketing. His course is ranked as one of the top 5 in the business
faculty. Since 1994, Retta has taught courses on Islam and Muslim
awareness. Educated in the USA and in the UK, he earned a BSc. in
Psychology and Management from Texas A&M and an Honors MA in
Cross-Cultural Ministry from Dallas Theological Seminary. At the
DTS, Retta mentored small groups in Spiritual Formation. He completed
thesis research at Oxford University in England, and the by-invitation,
International Leadership School of Operation Mobilization in Wales.
He earned the Certificate in International Assignments from the
ERC.
Retta was selected as Moderator for an international symposium
on Latino cultural identity called New Mundos 2000, co-sponsored
by the National Endowment for the Arts. He helped develop a series
of CD Roms entitled, Cultural Interviews with Latin American Executives
with the University of Texas. Edward is on the Advisory Board of
the Latino Cultural Center as Chair of Humanities and Education.
His company, Cross Culture Communications, consulted for NBC TV
(a GE subsidiary) on its integration of the Telemundo network.
Retta is a member of the Society for Intercultural Education Training
& Research (SIETAR), Dallas HR - the professional society for
Human Resources (SHRM), and the Japan-America Society. He lives
in Dallas, Texas and has 3 daughters. In 1988, Retta survived the
shipwreck of the MV Logos (Malta) in disputed waters, near Cape
Horn. He assisted the Chilean Navy in the official enquiry.
